This 7-7-7 slow release pellet fertiliser is perfect for Spring/Summer months when you want to encourage lots of healthy growth. It is a time of year when your tree will be exposed to warmer temperatures and plenty of natural light, so it will want to be fed regularly (we recommend once a month for most species, but some will enjoy slightly more regular feeds). With the 7-7-7 fertiliser get ready for lots of pruning and the opportunity to do some shaping and even potentially take some cuttings to propagate. This feed can be used all year.
Bonsai (like most plants) require nutrients to grow. The amount of feed a particular tree will need is determined by the size of the tree – we suggest a small pinch for the smaller Bonsai.
Fertilisers typically have three active ingredients which a Bonsai grower should consider when choosing a feed for their tree – Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Pot Ash (represented as the NPK value).

Pelleted fertiliser is a great choice for a Bonsai beginner because you are unlikely to hurt your trees roots when you feed. Liquid feeds can burn roots if you don’t know what you are doing. Its important when using a liquid feed to make sure your compost and roots are well soaked before feeding. With a pellet feed the level of saturation of the compost is not an important factor. Wet or dry, you can feed at any time and because the pellets are slow release, you can be confident that as you water your Bonsai the pellets will gradually release everything your trees needs to grow.
One bag of pelleted fertiliser should last a small Bonsai (a £12.50 tree) roughly a year, but of course the larger the tree the more feed you will use and how often you feed will be dependant on where your tree is going to live and how warm it will be throughout the winter months.
