We are looking for a friendly, positive, capable individual who is used to working in a customer focused environment and is able to provide second-to-none customer service. An interest in horticulture and Bonsai would be desirable, but is not essential.

The ideal person will enjoy the flurries of busy periods behind the counter and will be able to self motivate to get on with jobs whilst in the quieter times of the day. They will be happy to work individually during the majority of the working day behind the counter; able to work a till, handle money and chat to the customers giving them great customer service.

We are a small, family run business seeking a new member to become part of our team as one of our wonderful staff is relocating out of Cornwall – making the role available for a new person.

Our working season runs from the beginning of February until the end of November each year. Our staff work for 10 months and then are off work for December and January. The successful candidate will be someone who suits having the winter off work – or is happy to find alternative employment during the 2 months away from working at the nursery. Ideally we are looking for someone who will return after the winter break to start the following season at the beginning of February each year.

Working in a team you will play an active role in providing a positive customer experience and driving sales whilst maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of the shop. Health and safety precautions have been implemented for Covid-19 safety (perspex screens around the counter is one example). Although restrictions have been lifted – we are still keeping our screens up and providing hand sanitiser in our shop and indoor spaces.

Position hours: 32 hours guaranteed a week (4 full days) With the potential for more hours.

Which 4 days will be discussed at interview but ideally we would like 3 week days and one weekend day.

The Japanese Garden is open seasonally from 1st March until 15th November every year – unless lockdown has prohibited this. Interviews will be held at the garden address.

Responsibilities and Duties

The key role of this position will be delivering customer service in our retail shop and working a till and booking system.

The successful applicant must be able to work individually as well as working well in a team.
