Podocarpus (Buddist Pine)

Another beautiful species of Bonsai tree which will live indoors or outdoors and will handle a light frost due to its hardy nature. Podocarpus is an evergreen tree with pointed, leathery, dark green leaves. This species will flower in summer with small, creamy white flowers. A fast growing tree when in the right conditions. The species likes to be in a well lit position and doesn’t like to be over-watered. The Podocarpus tree is part of the conifer family and is often referred to as the ‘Buddist Pine’.

Informal upright Bonsai style (Moyogi)
The informal upright style is common in both nature and in the art of Bonsai. The trunk grows upright roughly in the shape of a letter ‘S’ and at every turn branching occurs. Tapering of the trunk must be clearly visible, with the base of the trunk thicker than the higher portion.

Each of these beautiful little starter trees come with a free ‘Bonsai Care Guide’ booklet which was written to give a beginner all the information they need to get started with growing Bonsai. Please read the booklet when your tree arrives and follow the instructions. If you have any questions you are welcome to drop us an email (which can be found on the back of your booklet) together with the major ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ list 😊

Podocarpus are fairly tolerant and hardy trees; making them good Bonsai for beginners and they should travel well by post; however, they are likely to drop some leaves during their journey and when they first arrive at their new home, so don’t be alarmed if you see a few leaves dropping at first. We will make sure your tree is well watered prior to being packaged and sent to you, so it shouldn’t dry out during transit. When it arrives take it out and remove all the packaging and position your tree in a well lit spot (outside or near a window), check the surface soil for moisture and water accordingly (follow instructions in your ‘Bonsai Care Guide’).

We have lots of these trees in stock and each one is unique! Informal-Upright style Bonsai is the classic S shape that makes them wonderfully unusual and. The tree you will get if you purchase one of these trees will not be one of the examples in the pictures. I have tried to show a range of examples of the Podocarpus in the photographs and one will be selected at random when a purchase is made.
