September has arrived for 2026 and what a crazy summer it has been!
The August heatwaves have been unbelievably hot and we had many of our season pass holders popping in for the shade of the garden.
Being at the bottom of the valley we are incredibly close to the water table and as a result we usually only ever need to water some of the moss in the summer – as its so shallow rooted.
The trees and other plants are so established now that they usually dont require additional watering but this year the staff were spending 3 hours a day watering the garden and Bonsai!
Plants that havent needed to be watered by us for the last 20 years were wilting and fortuneatly due to our amazing little team – these plants were noticed and watered regularly – so we havent lost any of our beautiful, mature plants.
It has been challenging to say the least and i think we all breathed a sigh of huge releif when we had some rain.
The intense sun definitely takes it toll on the plants every year – giving them energy but also reducing their moisture and when the rain comes it vitalises the garden and the leaves seem to replenish some of the lustrousness.
This was so true this August as the rain came at last in about week 3 – after so many weeks of baking hot sun.
As September begins we can already see a few leaves turning for autumn although we wonder if the drop in temperature might have given the plants a bit of a false start but we will have to see what happens during this month as i’ve heard reports of another hot spell potentially on the way (perhaps just the hopefuls that we will have our indian summer as we often do in this month though).
In other news we have had a phenomenal number of Bonsai sell this season and we put in an extra order which arrived last week – so we are well stocked again for the remaining few months of our open season.
We’ve also finally got back in stock our sapling Japanese Larch!
It has been years since we were able to stock these but they are finally back and priced the same as they have been for many years. – no price increase!
Japanese larch make sure wonderful bonsai as they have small, delicate foliage and are very pliable for styling – making them ideal for wiring.
